A Mississippi Valley State University football player was remembered Thursday during a memorial service on the campus in Itta Bena. MVSU junior linebacker Ryan Quinney, 20, of Mobile, Alabama, died last week as a result of a police chase that ended in a crash . The driver, Gregory Chambers Jr., remains hospitalized. Yazoo City police Chief Terry Gann said the chase started about 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 on Highway 49 in Flora after an apparent traffic violation. Chambers was driving southbound on Highway 49 toward Jackson when he turned his headlights off, so the officer lost track of him. A few minutes later, the officer spotted the 2021 Dodge Charger going north on Highway 49, Gann said. Gann said Yazoo City police were waiting at the first traffic light into the city. He said Chambers was driving so fast that officers quickly lost track of him. He believes the car was going in excess of 100 mph. Chambers apparently ran through all red lights on Highway 49 in Yazoo City. That was around 9:30 p.m., when Gann said there was moderate traffic on the highway. The car eventually crashed on Talbert Drive, which is a frontage road that runs parallel with Highway 49 across from Walmart. Chambers, who Gann said may be paralyzed, is being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed. Gann said investigators are waiting for subpoenas and warrants to collect evidence. The chief said marijuana and liquor were found in the car.
