The Manhattan High softball ended its season with a 9-3 loss to Topeka High, Wednesday afternoon. Topeka High (18-9) got the scoring started with two runs in the first inning. The Trojans first three batters all got on base, sparking the early lead. The Indians fought back in the 3rd inning, with a RBI single from Celia Courtright scoring Solveig Chase. Manhattan had the bases loaded with nobody out, but only added one run. The Trojans scored in the bottom of the 3rd from a key two-out, two-run RBI single from Montgomerie Freel. Things unraveled for the Indians in the 4th, as Topeka High led off with an inside-the-park homerun. They followed that up with three more runs that inning, making it a 8-1 lead. They later added another run in the 5th. Manhattan got back in the scoring column with two runs in the 7th inning. Jocelyn Harms hammered a double, scoring Chase. Kherington Law later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kat Ball. Freshman Josi Alesana pitched all six innings for the Indians, giving up nine earned runs. She walked four batters, but also struck out four. The Indians wrap up Jori Bellas’ first year at the helm with a record of 7-16. With plenty of underclassmen set to return, they’ll look to play deeper in the postseason next year.
