In the aftermath of a busy Saturday in Western Massachusetts Tournament action, it was also release day for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Associations state tournament brackets. Teams will start playing preliminary round games Monday night, with Berkshire County teams filling in brackets in Divisions III, IV and V in boys and girls basketball, at D-IV hockey. Berkshire County captured three top-four seeds, led by the Hoosac Valley girls at No. 2 in D-V, with Lenox No. 4 in that same field. In fact, with Drury No. 8 and Lee No. 9, the county has four of the top-10 seeds in the bracket. On the boys side, Drury earned the No. 4 seed in D-V, one spot behind the Granby team that defeated the Blue Devils in Saturday's Western Mass. Final.
Girls Basketball
Reagan Shea and the Hoosac Valley girls are the No. 2 seed in the MIAA D-V State Tournament. In addition to that packed D-V field, the Pittsfield girls are No. 5 in D-III and Wahconah is No. 15 in D-IV. The Generals (20-1) are the lone local team in the field and will await a preliminary round game between No. 28 Wilmington and No. 37 Whittier RVT. A win in the Round of 32 would potentially mean another visit from perennial pain North Reading. The Hornets have beaten PHS in the state tournament repeatedly recently, and are the 12 seed facing No. 21 Dennis-Yarmouth. If PHS reaches the state quarterfinals, it would mean a trip to No. 4 Medway. Saint Mary's, Foxborough and Norwell are the top-three seeds. Springfield ICS is the only other Western Mass. team near the top of the field at No. 17. Wahconah (13-7) earns the No. 15 slot and had a home game in the preliminary round against No. 50 Roxbury Prep, but Roxbury forfeited. That puts the Warriors into the Round of 32 against No. 18 West Bridgewater on Friday at 6 p.m. Then would potentially come a trip to No. 2 Millis. Cathedreal, Millis, South Hadley and Bourne are the top-four seeds. South Hadley is coming off a loss to Pittsield in the Western Mass. Final. Frontier and Hampshire Regional are Nos. 13 and 17, respectively. The D-V field is packed with potential fun matchups. At Nos. 8 and 9, there's a decent chance Lee and Drury meet in the Round of 16, while No. 4 Lenox might get another shot at No. 5 Renaissance, which beat the Millionaires Saturday night in the Western Mass. Final. All four local teams get a bye into the Round of 32. No. 2 Hoosac Valley (17-3) awaits the winner of a Western Mass. matchup between No. 31 Palmer and No. 34 Ware. Then would be the winner of No. 15 Westport and No. 18 Neighborhood House. No other county teams are in Hoosac's quadrant. Lenox (20-1) will get the winner of No. 29 Keefe Tech and No. 36 Fenway. Then would be the winner of No. 13 Hull and No.20 Norfolk Agricultural. If the Millionaires and Phoenix both reach the Round of 8, it'd be a Class C rematch likely in Springfield, for a chance to play No. 1 Hopedale in the Final Four. No. 8 Drury (10-10) has to first get through the winner of No. 25 Collegiate Charter of Lowell and No. 40 North Brookfield, before a potential home game against Lee. The No. 9 Wildcats (13-7) will have to advance past the winner of pesky No. 24 Mahar and No. 41 Ruth Batson. Mahar eliminated Lee last year. The winner of a potential Drury-Lee matchup would likely travel to No. 1 Hopedale. Maynard is the No. 3 seed. Boys Basketball
Connor Hinkell and the Drury boys are the No. 4 seed in the MIAA D-V State Tournament, while Granby is No. 3. While Drury is the lone top-four seed in boys basketball, there'll be a lot of home action to start the state tournament for Berkshire County. Monument Mountain and Taconic both earned single-digit seeds, while Hoosac and Lee are both in the top half of the D-V bracket. Despite a Western Mass. semifinal loss to Pittsfield, the Thunder (13-7) earned the No. 6 seed in the D-III bracket. Pittsfield (14-7) is a tough-luck No. 17. Both reached the Final Four last season. Taconic will await the winner of a preliminary matchup between No. 27 Gloucester and No. 38 Weston, while 11-seed Swampscott could be the Round of 16 matchup before a potential state quarterfinal trip to No. 3 Newburyport. PHS gets stuck traveling to No. 16 Lynn Classical out of the gate in the Round of 32 on Friday night at 7 p.m. If the Generals can prove road-worthy after Saturday's heart-breaker loss to Monument in the Western Mass. Final, they'd get a shot at No. 1 Saint Mary's. Newburyport and Shawsheen Valley are Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, while Western Mass. entrant Sci-Tech is No. 26. The Western Mass. champion Spartans enter the D-IV field at 19-2 with the No. 5 seed. A bye should give star guard Manny Brown time to heel the ankle he injured Saturday night. Meanwhile, No. 28 Blackstone Millville will play No. 37 Gardner for the right to travel to Great Barrington. No. 12 Hamilton-Wenham and No. 21 Cathedral play in the opposite side of the potential Round of 16 matchup. The Wahconah boys made the field at 8-12 thanks to a strong power rating, earning them the No. 24 seed. They get a preliminary home game against No. 41 Upper Cape Cod RVT, scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. In the Round of 32, No. 9 Manchester-Essex awaits. The top-four seeds in D-IV are, in order, Albert D. Holland Tech, Bourne, Clinton and Millbury. Five local teams made the D-V field, led by Drury (15-6) at No. 4. The Blue Devils will get some time to shake off their loss to Granby Saturday night while waiting for a potential visit from a county foe. No. 29 Mount Everett (11-9) gets a preliminary-round home game against No. 36 Boston Prep, scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. in Sheffield. The winner heads to North Adams to face Drury. And that may be only the start of the Blue Devils' local road. No. 13 Hoosac Valley (8-12) gets in with a strong power rating. The Hurricanes will also get a bye to the Round of 32, as No. 20 Athol and No. 45 Saint John Paul II play for the right to travel to Cheshire. But, if both Drury and Hoosac Valley advance to the Round of 16, they were meet in North Adams for the second time this winter. The two played to a 62-49 Blue Devils' win on Feb. 11. No. 14 Lee (14-6) goes directly into the Round of 32 with a home game against No. 19 Rockport. This is the Wildcats' first ever foray into the statewide tournament. No. 38 McCann Tech won two non-playoff games at the end of the regular season to get to 10-10 and punch it's state tournament ticket. The Hornets will have to start on the road, though, with a preliminary-round game at No. 27 Maynard, scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. The winner travels to No. 6 Duggan. The Jayhawks fell Saturday night in the PVIAC Western Mass. Class D Championship to Pioneer Valley. Pioneer is the top seed in D-V, followed by Hopedale, Granby and Drury. Ice Hockey
Coach Matt Risley's Taconic Thunder enter the MIAA D-IV State Tournament as the No 34 seed. The Taconic Thunder got beat up in the PVIAC Western Mass. Class B Championship game on Saturday night by Agawam, but will get a chance to get right in the state tournament. No. 34 Taconic (8-7-2) will travel for a preliminary-round game at No. 31 Dennis-Yarmouth on Cape Cod, scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. A win there would send the Thunder to No. 2 Hanover.
