A police-involved shooting occurred yesterday afternoon near Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, amid the backdrop of the "Best of the Best" music festival. According to NBC Miami , Miami Police Deputy Chief Armando Aguilar reported that an officer, who was directing traffic for the event, opened fire after being struck by a car at the intersection of 2nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

While the music festival was expected to attract around 12,000 attendees, the shooting incident quickly eclipsed the festivities, causing panic among concertgoers. Both the driver and the officer were wounded during the incident and have been taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, as noted in the initial reports. Injured in the event, the driver is currently undergoing surgery and is listed as in critical but stable condition.

Videos from the scene capture a chaotic environment, with people running and screaming following the sound of gunfire. "I heard three shots, pow, pow, pow," a festival attendee recounted in an interview with NBC Miami . The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken the lead in the investigation, a standard procedure in cases involving police shootings.

Amidst the confusion, a cellphone video posted on social media showed the aftermath of the incident, including a man who appears to be bleeding being handcuffed. Also attending the chaos, first responders from Miami Fire Rescue provided immediate aid to the gunshot victim, Assistant Chief Aguilar confirmed in a statement obtained by WSVN . The victim, reported to be a 21-year-old man, sustained seemingly minor injuries and was taken to Ryder Trauma Center.

The shooting and subsequent panic, while alarming, did not halt the festival, which continued on despite the investigative activity cordoning off parts of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast Second Street. Reflected in Aguilar's words, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils inherent in police work. "It’s just a reminder for everyone that there are dangers in the job that our officers perform, but thankfully, we right now do have the crime scene under control," Aguilar told WSVN . Authorities are presently working to determine the specifics of the shooting, including the number of shots fired and whether the officer was shot at in return.
