The Milwaukee Board of School Directors has narrowed its search for a new superintendent to three experienced education leaders following a nationwide search that attracted more than 50 applicants .

The finalists are Dr. Brenda Cassellius, former superintendent of Boston Public Schools; Dr. Joshua Starr, who previously led Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland; and Dr. Andraé Townsel, current superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools in Maryland.

"We are pleased by the number of stellar candidates who applied," Board President Herndon said. "We look forward to bringing the finalists to Milwaukee next week to meet with our stakeholders."

The candidates will visit the district on Feb. 6 and 7, for interviews, school visits, and community forums. Two public sessions are scheduled for February 6 at the MPS Central Office, where community members can meet the candidates and provide feedback.

The afternoon session runs from 1 to 3 p.m., with an evening session from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. Each candidate will give a presentation and answer moderated questions about their vision for the district.

The board expects to announce its final selection in late February or early March.

Four of the last five MPS superintendents have been appointed from within the district.

Former MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley resigned on June 30, 2024, following the scandal that erupted when it was revealed that the district was over eight months behind in submitting vital financial reports to the Department of Public Instruction.

Eduardo Galvan was appointed as the district's Acting Superintendent while the board designated an interim superintendent.

Galvan announced Friday he would not pursue the permanent leadership position, citing personal reasons in a letter to district families.
