ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Missouri Restaurant Association shared tips and advice to local businesses amidst nationwide ICE raids.

“Immigrants are an important part of the restaurant industry—over 20% of all U.S. workers in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Many immigration policies will change in the coming months," the memo says.

In St. Louis rumors continue to circulate over visits from ICE at area restaurants. The only confirmed contact happened at El Maguay in O’Fallon Missouri last Thursday. The manager told First Alert 4, ICE agents surrounded his car and took him and two other employees into custody for questioning. All we’re released. The manager said he doesn’t know why he was detained and he’s worked at the restaurant for more than 20 years.

Angela Ortmann is a consultant in the hospitality industry and says there’s a feeling of unease.

“A lot of restuarnat owners are feeling on edge,” said Ortmann.

She says the situation at El Maguay shows that even despite your legal status, you might still be detained.

“There are people who are in the process of getting citizenship or have legal paperwork who are seeing consequences,” she said.

Missouri Restaurant Association says restaurant owners should ask for a warrant if ICE shows up, but not interfere. They should ensure all I-9 paperwork is in order and up to date.

First Alert 4 continues to reach out to ICE to get an understanding of how many arrests are happening in the St. Louis region but they have not responded to requests for information.

A spokesperson for the FBI in St. Louis says they are currently assisting DHS and other federal law enforcement partners with their immigration enforcement efforts.
