A Columbia, Missouri, sandwich institution is closing shop.

Sub Shop, long a stop for Mizzou fans, made the announcement Monday. It's operated for 49 years, and is located at 209 S. Eighth St.

" Although the last several years have been rough for us both professionally and personally we are forever grateful (Stay grateful, Eat Bread, Play the Dead)," its social media post read. "We supported our family and several other families over the years, living, learning and loving in Columbia, MO. Sub Shop always had loyal customers smart enough to recognize a quality product and to support a truly locally owned business (not a franchise owned by someone who lives in the community)."

Kirk Wacker has long owned the business .
