COLUMBIA, S.C. - Rain chances increase even more across the Midlands today and tomorrow. Storms with heavy downpours will become more frequent through Monday which could lead to areas of flooding. This is why a First Alert Weather Day has been issued for Monday. Stay rain gear ready for the next couple of days. Additional periods of rain and thunder are forecast for today and tomorrow. Similar to yesterday, Mother’s Day will be unseasonably cool with much of the day spent in the 60s. Expect highs only as warm as the upper 60s to lower 70s. The weather is expected to become more disruptive by Monday. Widespread showers and storms will impact the region. The likelihood of more frequent heavy downpours over saturated ground may lead to flash flooding in areas, especially in spots that have poor drainage and are low-lying. The Monday morning commute will likely be impacted with heavy rain leading to reduced visibilities and ponding of water on roads. Also, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire area under a ‘Marginal 1/5 Risk’ for the possibility of a few gusty storms through the day. Rainfall amounts through Monday night could exceed 3″ in spots. Rain chances will continue Tuesday and Wednesday but will be much lower. It will be a much different finish to the workweek compared to its start. Drier conditions are expected for the second half of next week with highs around 90 degrees. Mother’s Day: Temperatures climb to the lower 70s. Scattered showers likely. Tonight: Periods of rain likely with thunder at times. Chance of rain 70%. Lows in the low to mid 60s. First Alert Weather Day (Monday): Periods of heavy rainfall with an isolated strong storm potential. Highs in the middle 70s. Tuesday: Warmer with scattered showers and storms.
