A 24-year-old Springfield man who was riding a motorcycle died of injuries sustained May 1 when he hit a downed tree across the roadway.

Springfield Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1, in the 2600 block of W. Madison Street, according to a department news release.

According to police, Tyler Trombetta was riding a 2024 Harley-Davidson motorcycle west on Madison when he hit a downed tree across the roadway. According to the release, the tree was marked with cones.

Trombetta, who police said was not wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

A storm with winds up to 90 mph on Monday, April 29, left trees downed and properties damages across Springfield and the surrounding area.

This was Springfield’s seventh fatal motor vehicle crash of the year, bringing the total to eight deaths. Last year, Springfield City Council committed to a policy aimed at eliminating all traffic-related fatalities in the city by 2040 and all serious traffic-related injuries by 2050 in an initiative called Vision Zero . Currently, Springfield places 13th in the country among 172 largest cities when it comes to the rate of traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents.
