A man, 56, has died after a multi-vehicle collision in Olney Wednesday afternoon, Montgomery County police said Wednesday evening in an emailed statement.

Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) personnel responded just after 2:30 p.m. to the 2600 block of Olney Sandy Spring Road for a report of a collision, according to the statement.

The location of the crash was near MedStar Montgomery Medical Center and Brookdale Olney assisted living facility and less than a mile from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School.

According to police and MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer, the collision involved four vehicles, including a green Jeep and a blue Lexus with one of the drivers trapped in their vehicle. That driver was extricated and was classified as a priority 1 trauma.

State medical emergency services protocols define priority 1 as a “critically ill or injured person requiring immediate attention; unstable patients with life-threatening injury or illness.”

Three people were transported to the hospital after the collision, according to police. The man driving the Lexus was transported with “serious injuries” and later was pronounced dead at the hospital. An adult female passenger was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Jeep, a juvenile male, was also transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

More information including the identity of the man who died will be released following proper notification of next of kin, police said.

Following the crash, officers closed off Olney Sandy Spring Road between Old Baltimore Road and Prince Philip Drive for several hours, county police said in a social media post Wednesday afternoon. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays.

The county police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unity is investigating the incident, the statement said. The unit is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call them at 240-773-6620.
