EAST CHICAGO — At least three East Chicago Central High School students were hospitalized Tuesday following apparent drug overdoses at the school, the East Chicago Police Department said.

East Chicago police and medics responded to an overdose call at the school at 9:30 a.m., officials said.

Security personnel at the school told police that "several" students had eaten gummies that were laced with an unknown substance.

Initially, one student was taken to St. Catherine Hospital and several others were released to their parents. By 2 p.m., two more students had been taken to the hospital by their parents.

One student is in custody for possession of a controlled substance and dealing a controlled substance. They will be transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center, police said.

East Chicago police are asking any parents with questions or concerns about the incident to contact the School City of East Chicago.
