I am pretty much always in the mood for something sweet. And when I do follow through with my urges (which isn't always!) I want to make sure I get my delicious baked goods from the best of the best.

Buttercream Bakeshop

This is both a dessert lover’s and Instagram lover’s dream. Everything in here is seriously gorgeous, from the furniture to the cupcakes. And whether you just want something small or an entire wedding cake, this bakery has you covered. Plus, with buttercream literally in their name, how can it possibly not be good?
Try one of their signature treats, like a Cookie Cream Pie or a Unicorn Bar.

Baked and Wired

Baked and Wired is by far the best cupcake place in the city, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Sure, there are plenty of these “famous for being on TV” (we won’t mention names) spots, but they’re severely overpriced, overcrowded, and overhyped. Baked and Wired has that perfect bakery/premium coffee shop ambiance, and they’ve got all the flavors in the world. And, the cupcakes themselves are pretty large; if you need more than one to get your fix, you’re a fiend (but I’m impressed).
I always get the classic red velvet because you just can’t go wrong with that, but other popular flavors include dirty chai and double chocolate.

Dangerously Delicious Pies

I know come fall you’re going to crave some pie, so I wanted to include this place for your short list. This pie heaven is great for those who prefer sweet or savory (or if you’re anything like me, both). Let’s start with the sweet pies. I pretty much can’t say anything bad about any of them, but my current favorites are the Apple Crumb Pie (I can basically taste fall) and the Pancake Batter Pie. For savory, try the Beer Brat Pie or the Steak, Mushroom, Onion, and Gruyere Pie.
You can either grab a slice of order the whole pie to take home.

Paisley Fig

You can actually buy Paisley Fig goods at other locations like Dolcezza or Cork Wine Bar, or Glen’s Garden Market, but they’ve recently opened their very own bakery. Paisley Fig specializes in specialty cakes with all-natural fresh ingredients, and every aspect made from scratch.
I like caffeine, so, of course, I gravitate towards the Lizzy’s Sweet Thomas, which features espresso cake, mocha buttercream, chopped Reese’s pieces, and crushed salted peanuts. Can you say yum fast enough? Other ones you should definitely give a chance to are the Honey Goat Cheese Cheesecake and The Luci, which is a pistachio cake with apricot jam and ganache, vanilla buttercream, and poured chocolate glaze. I’m dying, and you probably are, too.

Sticky Fingers Sweets and Eats

I wanted to add a vegan option to the list; just because you can’t (or won’t) have dairy, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy a sweet treat every once in a while! Plus, everything here is so good you won’t even realize that it doesn’t have those more traditional ingredients. And, as the cherry on top (pun intended), it’s won several local awards for its innovative desserts.
Taste the Watermelon Cupcake to keep you cool this August. Or, go for the Charity of the Month Cupcake, which is Almond Crème this month, where for every cupcake purchased Sticky Fingers will donate a $1 to Asylum Seeker Assistant Project. Satisfy your sweet tooth and better the community!

All these bakeries have a little something different to offer, so all tastes and preferences can find something they like. And all these names I thought were especially cool -- I love all the creativity that local businesses in D.C. are representing!
