HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska Department of Education responded to a report of Chase County Public School District purchasing scoreboards using school lunch funds early Tuesday morning.

Earlier this year, the district reportedly spent almost $125,000 in school lunch money funds on electronic billboards for their gymnasium that display the lunch menu during the school day.

Now, the department is responding saying that this was not an approved use of school lunch money funds.

“The original expense does not meet funding requirements for approval,” said David Jespersen, who works for the Nebraska Department of Education.

The department has said they are requiring the school to get bids from three different contractors for real lunch room displays. From there, they will have to reimburse the school lunch money account the cost of the score boards minus the cost of the new displays.
