HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - As open enrollment approaches, many seniors are preparing to sign up for medical benefits, but the Nebraska Hospital Association is raising concerns about Medicare Advantage plans. During a press conference Tuesday morning, hospital executives from across Nebraska outlined several issues with the plans.

NHA President Jeremy Nordquist cautioned that Medicare Advantage plans have the ability to change a patient’s in-network health care providers.

Robert Dyer, CEO of Cozad Community Health System, highlighted the growing burden of the prior authorization process, which he said requires more staff than ever before.

The confusion extends beyond providers to the medications patients need. Dr. Stephen Mohring of Nebraska Medicine noted that formulary medications can vary significantly between Medicare Advantage plans and may change, leaving patients uncertain about coverage.

“Unfortunately, that makes it extremely difficult for patients to know whether or not their meds are going to be covered or that may change at any time,” Dr. Mohring said.

Jed Hansen, Executive Director of the Nebraska Rural Health Association, encouraged seniors to seek help through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which offers both paid and volunteer counselors.

“I would urge them to reach out to SHIP before making any changes so that they could understand the totality of what they’re signing up for,” Hansen said.
