Capoeira Angola for Beginners at AsanaRoots Every Saturday, July 8-29, from 9-10 a.m.

Fitness Trends Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian art form that pulls from the disciplines of martial arts, music, and dance. This beginners class, led by Donna Colaço, will be a great introduction to this little-known form of movement and fitness. Students will learn some basic exercises to develop the core strength, flexibility, and balance essential for the many inversions that are part of the Capoeira style. The class will also cover some partner sequences, as well as how to move along with the rhythm of music, song, and instrumentation.
"Capoeira is a valuable tool for self-development and healing combining elements of self-defense, music, philosophy, and community..."
This class is for beginners with no experience required. T-shirts, pants, and shoes are required for class. Donna Colaço has been training Capoeira Angola for nine years at FICA DC with some of the most well known names in the local capoeira scene. Colaço has traveled to Brazil, Canada, and Mexico to train and teach capoeira in various communities.

YoGaGa at YogaWorks Midtown July 28, from 8-9 p.m.

[caption id="attachment_2622" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Fitness Trends Yep, this is for real[/caption] This is really happening. In Baltimore. Of course. YoGaga is, as you may have assumed, Lady Gaga themed yoga. Teacher Liz Ragland is a huge fan of the ultra-famous, ultra-weird pop-star, and she became so inspired that she decided create a yoga practice inspired by Lady Gaga herself. The class is described as "an empowering and freeing vinyasa class celebrating uniqueness and fierce spirits." The class will consist of traditional yoga, dancing, breathing, and chanting, all to the soundtrack of Lady Gaga's best songs. Ragland also got a bit creative and renamed some traditional poses in Mother Monster's honor, like "Poker Facing Dog" and "Bad Crowmance." You'll just have to check out the class to hear the rest of those juicy YoGaga puns.

The class is a "community offering", meaning it is free to YogaWorks members, and only $7 for non-members to join in on the fun.

Hula Hoop Fusion, AsanaRoots, August 6, from 12-2:15 p.m.

[caption id="attachment_2623" align="aligncenter" width="960"]Fitness Trends Instructor Katie Capon[/caption] When we think of hula hooping we usually imagine the 1950s fitness craze. But these days the hula hoop trend has evolved into something entirely new and totally modern, a "flow art." The word flow art typically refers to the manipulation of props, such as hula hoops, juggling clubs, poi, or staffs, but it can also be used to refer to any type of art that leaves your mind in a focused, relaxed state of being. This is called "the flow state." Yoga instructor Katie Capon wants to combine hula hoop dance, a flow art, with another, more commonly practice flow art: yoga. This class will cover the fundamentals of how to hula hoop– since it is often more difficult than we think; but, the class will also cover new ways to use a hula hoop to enhance your yoga practice. Capon says in class students will "find new challenges by incorporating the weight and movement of this prop into poses we may have once thought we had mastered. The use of the hula hoop can be a great form of cardio, toning and resistance so be prepared to use the body, find flexibility and muscle engagement in new ways." Long story short, go to class prepared to MOVE! You can bring your own hula hoop, but if you don't have one, the studio will provide one for you.
