Construction has begun on a new indoor sports complex in Springfield. When “The St. James” opens, it will be a state-of-the-art facility like no other.
Next year, a brand new 20-acre indoor sports complex will open at 6805 Industrial Rd. in Springfield. With 450,000 square feet, "The St. James" will house everything from batting cages to Olympic-sized swimming pools, as well as health and relaxation facilities. Co-founders and CEOs Kendrick Ashton and Craig Dixon also plan to open a restaurant run by a celebrity chef within the complex, as well as a water park, trampolines, and virtual reality games.
The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, September 7, and featured Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and CSN sportscaster Chic Hernandez. Construction is already well underway, with the entire steel frame nearly in place.
Ashton and Dixon acquired the site in 2016 from Washington Gas and Light Co., paying a whopping $20.35 million. They have not yet disclosed how much the entire project will cost, though they have gained the financial backing of a global equity firm called Cain International. They're apparently going for broke as the facility is planned to be biggest sports complex in the D.C. area!
Other amenities that The St. James facility will supposedly feature include an FIFA regulation turf soccer field, four full-length basketball courts, two NHL-sized ice rinks, a hockey skills training center, six batting cages, eight squash courts, several golf simulators, a gymnastics training center, a 50,000-square-foot health club (housing yoga, group fitness rooms, and cardio and strength-training equipment), 20,000 square feet of zip lines and trampolines, a health and sports medicine center, a spa with treatment rooms and cryotherapy chamber, party rooms, a gaming theater, and a clothing boutique. The indoor water park will feature 6,000 feet of slides, sprayers, and dumping buckets.

In addition, The St. James will also host tournaments and competitions in more than 30 sports and offer private coaching, personal training, and developmental programs designed for youth and beginners.
When the facility opens in 2019, it will have a 1,200-person capacity and the ability to host over 2,100 people during special events.
