NEWARK, NJ —A recent survey conducted by Zinnia Health, a behavioral health treatment network, has shed light on the drinking habits and attitudes of New Jersey residents. The survey, which included 3,000 participants, revealed that the average person in New Jersey considers 2:43 PM an acceptable time to start drinking alcohol. This time is considered a green light for libations, although opinions vary widely across different locations in the U.S.

Zinnia Health’s survey also highlighted how special occasions and social contexts significantly influence drinking habits. Thirty-eight percent of respondents see weekends as a judgment-free time to start drinking earlier, and 36% feel the same about holidays. Interestingly, a majority are not concerned about judgment from others for drinking early, with 17% responding to disapproval by raising their glass in a toast.

Social dynamics around daytime drinking were a key focus of the survey. Sixty percent of respondents would not drink alone before 5 PM. As summer approaches, one-third admitted that warmer weather encourages them to drink earlier. Furthermore, after exercise, 55% prefer mocktails to cocktails. A notable 44% of participants would confront someone they know if they regularly started drinking before 5 PM, showing a proactive stance on addressing potential alcohol abuse.

Rebecca Hill of Zinnia Health emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks of early drinking. She stated, “Regularly consuming alcohol before 5 PM can lead to unhealthy habits and alcohol dependence. It’s crucial for individuals to be mindful of their drinking patterns and seek support if needed.”
