ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - With mass federal layoffs, some impacting people in our hometowns, there are free resources that can help you with the job hunt. The new location of the Virginia Career Works Roanoke Center is the 707 building in Downtown Roanoke. “The main reason that we decided to move was to make our center more accessible to the public that we serve,” said Toni McLawhorn, Business & Development Manager. Even though it’s in a new location, the center still offers the same free services. “A lot of times people will have a resume and they need somebody to critique it. Sometimes they come in and they don’t have a resume and they don’t think they have anything to put on one. So by working with them and asking them questions and using the information that’s on our workforce connection site, they can build a resume and can get help doing that…. If there is a need that’s uncovered for more intensive career counseling, then they can be referred to our career counseling program where we may actually be able to help fund education and training for them in terms of certifications or just some classes so that they have some credentials to add to their resume,” said McLawhorn. It can be intimating starting over, but Virginia Career Works hopes to make the process easier. “Sometimes people who have been working for one employer for a while and then find themselves either wanting to look for something new or needing to look for something new, they may be embarrassed. They may not feel comfortable, they may not be confident in themselves, and by coming in where they can sit down with somebody one-on-one and get some assistance. We do hope to relieve some of those anxieties,” said McLawhorn. The new address for the Roanoke Center is 707 Jefferson Street, Third Floor, Roanoke, VA 24016.
