In a 2017 WalletHub study identifying the most charitable states, Colorado came in at No. 26 -- right smack dab in the middle. Ouch.
But we have a chance to change all that! With
Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 5 -- called "one of the largest one-day giving movements in the country" -- Coloradans can come together to support our local nonprofits through online giving.
Since 2010, the one-day online event has raised more than $145 million for local charities, with a total of $200 million raised by the
ColoradoGives.org since 2007. Operated throughout the year, the ColoradoGives website keeps track of the programs and financials for more than 2,300 nonprofits in the state, ensuring pure transparency and making fundraising and donating simple on everyone's part. Sponsored by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, the event also includes a $1 million Incentive Fund, which means that each nonprofit that receives a donation on Dec. 5 will also receive a portion of that additional fund, making each donation all the more valuable to the receiving organization. You can't beat that!
How to Give:
- Search for the nonprofit(s) you want to support on the ColoradoGives website. Nonprofits and fundraisers can be located via name, type, region, etc., and you can use filters to narrow down your search.
- Simply fill out the online form with your donation details and check out. Easy-peasy!
- A receipt will be emailed to you.
- Though you can give toward the charity of your choice any day of the year, remember that only donations on December 5 will qualify to trigger an addition portion from the #1 million Incentive Fund! So the site allows you to schedule your donation for Tuesday, Dec. 5, or, if you can, hold off on your donations until then!

To determine the results of its Most Charitable States study, WalletHub measured the states across "14 key indicators of charitable behavior," including everything from the amount of volunteer work to the share of income donated. Colorado came in No. 36 for "Volunteering and Service" and No. 17 for "Charitable Giving," which averaged out to No. 26 on the list. Utah ranked No. 1, while Hawaii landed at No. 50. So what do you say, Colorado? Shall we prove WalletHub wrong? Should we make Colorado Gives Day the most successful ever, and come together to support the nonprofits doing so much good in our community? When our nonprofits win, everybody wins!
