VIRGINIA BEACH — What if you could own the Virginia Beach Boardwalk or Town Center?

You’ll have to fork over some cash, but when the rent payments start rolling in, it’s smooth sailing.

In the new Monopoly: Virginia Beach Edition, the Boardwalk and Town Center are the most expensive and yet most desired properties on the board. A host of other local landmarks, organizations and businesses landed a spot as well.

The game was unveiled Friday night at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.

Top Trumps USA Inc., a game company, develops localized Hasbro Monopoly editions. The company has produced 40 city editions in the United States. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, also was released recently. Virginia Beach is Virginia’s second board. A Richmond game was released in 2023.

According to the company, it chooses places with natural beauty , parks, beaches, a strong sense of community, and local businesses.

Last summer, the public was invited to submit suggestions for the featured squares. Each one selected met guidelines for credibility, longevity and community engagement, according to the game company.

Virginia Beach residents will recognize the iconic symbols of the city and some of their favorite hangouts.

The collage in the center of the board features the King Neptune statue, fighter jets, the beach, strawberries, the First Street Jetty, sea creatures and the Cape Henry Lighthouse.

Some businesses represented on the squares are Aldo’s Ristorante, Sugar Plum Bakery and Coastal Grill. The Neptune Festival, Lynnhaven oysters and the historic Cavalier Hotel also landed on the board.

Original Monopoly’s railroad squares have been replaced with a beach bike, a four-wheeled Surry bike, a kayak and Rudee Rocket, the speed boat that takes people out in the ocean to whale watch.

Instead of tax squares, there is a Naval recruiting fee of $100, and marina boat docking fee of $200.

The game pieces that players move around the board are the same as the original game, but it features customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards. Players collect $200 salary when they pass Go, and the dreaded Go To Jail square remains.

Monopoly: Virginia Beach Edition is available on the Top Trumps USA website for $44.99 and will be available for sale at many of the places featured on the board.
