There are a lot of things to be excited about during the new year, especially in the world of entertainment. This January sees the premieres of some of the most buzzed-about shows. Here is a short guide about some of the soon-to-be hits gracing our television screens.

9-1-1 (Premiered Jan. 3)

Ever think about the day-to-day lives of first responders? Probably not a lot. The newest show from powerhouses Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (masterminds behind “Glee” and “American Horror Story,” to name a few) takes you into their world. The procedural drama covers the lives of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics and how they deal with extremely intense situations. The fast-paced show brings the drama, but also has an all-star cast. Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights,” “Nashville,” “American Horror Story”), Peter Krause (“Parenthood,” “Six Feet Under”) and Angela Bassett (“American Horror Story,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It”) are some of the heavy hitters playing real-life roles. So if you're in the mood for a Law & Order-esque drama, check this show out. Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on FOX

Grown-ish (Premiered Jan. 3)

Shahidi can carry a show all on her own and is aided by more fresh young faces. Funny, risqué, and relevant, “Grown-ish” can join the ranks of other successful young adult dramedies. Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform

The Chi  (Premiered Jan. 7)

Going into the lives of several residents in the area, the series is thought-provoking, compelling, and powerful. Sundays at 10 p.m. on Showtime

Black Lightning (Premieres Jan. 16)

[caption id="attachment_5750" align="aligncenter" width="620"] Black Lightning on the CW[/caption] Joining the DC universe on the CW network is this newest superhero darling. “Black Lightning” sees the retired hero, Jefferson Pierce (played by television vet Cress Williams), return to his life of fighting crime when a local gang begins to terrorize the city. Pierce has to deal with the impact that his super-powered life has on his family. Even if you aren’t a fan of superheroes, this show is set to be more complicated than the rest. It takes on a troubled community and different family dynamics. Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on the CW

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story  (Premieres Jan. 17)

OJ Simpson,” American Crime Story is taking on the events that lead up to the 1997 murder of fashion powerhouse Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) and the capture of his killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss). The story also centers around Cunanan’s other killings. If you are a fan of the first season, you will surely enjoy this one. Amazing writing, superstar cast, and impeccable fashion are all in this installment. Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX

The Resident (Premieres Jan. 21)

“The Resident” is a new medical drama that looks into the good and evil of modern day medicine. With a special premiere following the NFC championship, the show is bound to be a hit and apparently looks at issues that are not usually talked about in medical dramas seen today.
