Chants of “No Kings!” by the No Kings Alexandria Rally participants holding signs and standing along Jackson Street near the Ned Randolph Riverfront Center in downtown Alexandria on Saturday were met with the sharp sound of a whistle from one of four supporters of President Donald Trump who showed up to oppose the rally.

Some motorists honked to show their support, but not all were happy to see the rally. As one man drove by, he gave rally goers the middle finger. Others were seen using their smartphones to take photos or video.

One SUV driver stopped in the middle of the street, got out of his vehicle and gave two thumbs up to rally participants. Someone then yelled, “ICE is going to get you, Buddy!” An Alexandria Police officer approached the motorist and told him he had to get back in his vehicle.

Before bad weather conditions ended the rally sooner than its intended time at 2 p.m., Alexandria Police Chief Chad Gremillion said there were no problems.

Erin Tracy of Alexandria organized the No Kings Rally because she wanted to meet people in Central Louisiana with the same viewpoint as her. She was pleased with the turnout.

“It’s not even noon yet, and we’ve already got a bunch of people, and that’s really exciting and just goes to show that people don’t like our wannabe king,” said Tracy before the start of the noon day rally. “We’ve got a lot of issues. There’s immigration issues. Everybody’s broke. People can’t afford food. We’ve got the abortion issue. There's just so many different things, clearly, a lot of us are opposed to. We live in a red state but we’re trying to come together, meet each other and find the people who agree with common decency.”

She didn’t really care about President Trump’s supporters who showed up and said they were doing their best not to pay attention to them.

“I don’t think these people have a lot of humanity,” Tracy said. “So we’re supporting humanity. That’s the main thing.”

“Why are they in Alexandria? Why do they need to be here for? We’re here protesting them being here,” said one of President Trump’s supporters before the start of the rally. “They’re already trying to start something. We’re just sitting here.”

Kathy Kirkland drove from Jena to attend Alexandria’s rally.

“I think it’s important to show that we oppose this blatant violation, the many blatant violations of the Constitution, that have taken place, and that we don’t support a monarchy,” she said. “We don’t support autocracy. We don’t want a dictator. And we don’t want a theocracy. It’s very important that people understand what this means. And I hope that they take the time to research it.”

Standing next to Kirkland was Jan Coleman of Alexandria, who was holding an American flag.

“This is my husband’s flag from Vietnam — 1964,” she said. “I’m here for him and all the soldiers.”

Helen Moore, 96, of Pineville says she came to the rally “to help save our democracy.”

“I’m Helen Moore, and I’m a lifelong Democrat,” she said. “But whether you are Republican or Democrat, we need to save our Democracy. I see the same thing happening here that happened back in 1938 with Hitler. And then we went to war in World War II and lost so many people.”

She continued by saying that No Kings Day is important because there is no king in this country.

“We’re fixing to have a dictatorship if we don’t get busy and save our democracy. And that covers Democrats, Republicans — my Republican friend here — Independents — any person that is a great American,” she said. “Let’s get busy because complacency means consent.”
