Norfolk Academy senior Chance Stuart recently won the Adidas indoor national championship in the shot put with a distance of 58 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Bulldogs coach Patrick Fernando said Stuart is NA’s first track and field national champ. Stuart won the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools and League of Independent Schools titles. Then, he not only won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championship in the shot put, he set a meet record of 59 feet, the longest in history by a teen private-school student in Virginia. With a 3.96 grade-point average, he’s set to attend Lehigh University on an athletic scholarship after being accepted into the engineering program. He holds Norfolk Academy’s dead-lift and squat records and has been nominated for a USA All-American Weightlifting Award. Leach third in ex-NFL players tourney: William & Mary women’s golf coach Mike Leach placed third last weekend in the “PRO FTB” tournament at PGA Frisco, near Dallas. In a highly competitive Stableford scoring event for former NFL players, Leach — a former star W&M tight end and longtime NFL long snapper whose son, Ryan, plays golf for West Virginia University — led after the tourney’s first two days. Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, now a CBS NFL commentator, won, and former Houston Texans tight end Garrett Graham was second. Former kicker Ryan Succop was fourth and former punter Brett Kern fifth. Ryan eagled the first hole and followed with three birdies for the victory. The PRO “Pro Rivals Open” series also will feature tournaments for former hockey and basketball players near Chicago in July and for ex-baseball players in December near Tampa, Florida. Bleachers and a new scoreboard and sound system are planned, and spaces for school-wide gatherings are planned. In Phase II, scheduled to be completed in August 2026, the square footage of the strength and conditioning spaces will be tripled, the locker rooms and officials’ rooms will be renovated and a new team office room and athletic offices will be constructed.
