WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Two people are dead and two others are in the hospital following multiple crashes on the Kansas Turnpike early Monday morning. It happened at around 4:30 a.m. on northbound I-35 between 95th and 103rd streets. Capt. David Hundley with the Kansas Highway Patrol said a semi tractor hit a deer, swerved and struck the inside barrier wall. A second vehicle collided with that truck. A second semi pulled over on the shoulder, and a northbound passenger car struck that semi. Two people from Minnesota in the passenger car died at the scene. Their names have not been released. Capt. Hundley said there were a total of four crashes, adding that two other people involved were taken to the hospital. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log , one of the injured was the 45-year-old Houston woman driving the semi that hit the deer. She was transported to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of potentially serious injuries. KanDrive.gov showed the northbound lanes of the turnpike were closed between mile markers 32 (near Mulvane) and 38 (near Haysville) for 4+ hours.
