Northern Colorado golfer Gage Messingham finished fourth at the Big Sky Conference men’s tournament Thursday, capping a week of honors for the freshman from Arvada.

Messingham shot a 3-under par for the three-day tournament at Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona, to finish four shots behind individual winner Joe Sykes of Idaho.

Sykes, a sophomore from Littlehampton, England, shot 69-70-70 (209) on the par 72 and 7,051-yard course for a three-shot lead on second-place finishers Isaac Buerger of Weber State and Gabriel Smith of Sacramento State.

Sacramento State won the team title at 2-under 862 in the four-team tournament. Weber State and Idaho finished three and four shots back in the team standings, respectively. Weber State was 1-over 865 and Idaho was 2-over par 866.

UNC, which did well in the recently released individual awards, finished at 12-over par (294-290-292-876).

UNC’s TJ Shehee and Pietro Boeris tied for 11th place at 4-over (220). Peter Grossenbacher finished 16th at 9-over 225. Shehee tied with Sykes for the lowest round Thursday with a 2-under 70.

Messingham (72-70-71) earned all-tournament team honors with the fourth-place finish, helped by three birdies on the last six holes. He lowered his season-scoring average to 72.03, which is the sixth-lowest single-season average in program history.

He was named Big Sky player of the year and first-team all-conference earlier this week.

Boeris (73-72-75) was the freshman of the year, and he and Antti Vahvaselka were conference honorable mention selections. Boeris had a 72.76 stroke average during the season, which is the 10th-lowest in school history.
