FAIRMONT, W.Va . — Workers at the Novelis Plant in Fairmont got tough news on Monday morning. The company announced it would be closing the operation for good on June 30th.

“Novelis is consolidating its U.S. operations and has made the difficult decision to close operations in Fairmont, West Virginia, which will take effect on June 30, 2025. Our workforce is deeply valued for their hard work and decades of dedication, and we’re committed to handling their transition with the utmost respect and care.

We want to express our gratitude to the city of Fairmont and the state of West Virginia for allowing us to serve this region for many years. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this community.”

The company makes a number of aluminum products mainly for the automotive and heating and cooling industry. More than 200 work at the plant in Fairmont.

A company spokesperson said 189 jobs in Fairmont will be impacted, however, they added Novelis will create more than 300 new jobs at other plants across North America in the coming year. Officials said they are working with impacted West Virginia employees to see if they may want to pursue job opportunities in other Novelis facilities.

Unidentified workers tell MetroNews they were told in Monday meetings with management the plant had a lot of expensive maintenance needs which contributed to the decision. Workers said they were also told the Trump Administration tariffs created circumstances which forced the move as well.
