STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 31-year-old man who shot at police in Port Richmond on Sunday night had, minutes before, fled two traffic stop attempts, according to the NYPD. Just before 7:30 p.m. the motorist behind the wheel of a silver Nissan SUV allegedly fled a traffic stop attempt in the vicinity of Forest Avenue and South Avenue in Mariners Harbor, a spokesperson for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said. After the suspect fled the first attempted stop, a second NYPD vehicle attempted to halt the fleeing suspect, which the suspect skirted, police allege. The Nissan then traveled on Port Richmond Avenue, where the driver allegedly fired upon a marked NYPD vehicle in the vicinity of Port Richmond Avenue and Albion Place. The officers in the vehicle sustained injuries related to shattered glass, according to police. Although the officers did not return fire, the suspect collided with a parked car in the vicinity of Port Richmond Avenue and Albion Place; he was then taken into custody. Two firearms were recovered from the SUV, an NYPD spokesperson said. The suspect was also transported to an area hospital for a medical episode unrelated to the shooting incident, police said. His identification and charges have yet to be made available to the public. Police did not provide the cause for the initial traffic stop attempt. In addition to NYPD officers, federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
