"Red's Backyard" will open to the public on December 23, and it's completely free!

Olympic snowboarder Red Gerard captivated audiences and endeared himself to Coloradans when he won the gold medal for his slopestyle performance at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Known in Silverthorne for his own homemade miniature snowboarding park in his family’s backyard, Gerard is excited to share this one-of-a-kind park. In partnership with Copper Mountain, Gerard is opening Red’s Backyard, a free "hike-to" terrain park, which will not require a lift ticket.

Red’s Backyard will be a take on the homemade rails set up in his backyard that drew a lot of attention from local and professional snowboarders.

The open free terrain park will not have a motorized tow rope, like the one in his backyard park. Red’s Backyard will officially open on December 23, with Gerard hosting a grand opening event, Red’s Backyard Jam. The grand opening, at 9 a.m., will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and rail jam, as well as the chance for fans to hang out with the young snowboarder.

At the 2018 Olympics, Gerard famously overslept, wore a borrowed coat, and swore on live television after landing the gold. He endeared himself to fans across the globe, and from the sounds of it, he hopes to keep moving the sport of snowboarding along and make it something more people can enjoy.

Copper Mountain is owned by Powdr Corp., which has a plan in place with Gerard to open two more locations of Red’s Backyard terrain parks—Park City, Utah, and Killington, Vermont.
