Two people were shot, one of them fatally, Wednesday morning in Annapolis’ Clay Street neighborhood, according to city Police Chief Ed Jackson.

In an interview, Jackson said officers responded to reports of gunfire at about 7:40 a.m. and found the two men shot. One of them, a juvenile, was injured in the foot and taken to an area hospital, while the other, an adult, was pronounced dead, he said.

As of 10:30 a.m., authorities have not publicly identified either victim.

Police are still working to establish a motive, though the chief did not provide details about a fight that occurred Tuesday.

“My detectives are vigorously following up with the leads we have now,” Jackson said.

The shooting and the “pretty big scene” police are processing caused closures for some of the government buildings surrounding the downtown Annapolis neighborhood.

In a 9 a.m. Facebook post, County Executive Steuart Pittman said the Arundel Center, where the Anne Arundel County Council meets, and the Whitmore Parking garage have reopened.

Both Pittman and Jackson said the closures were made out of an abundance of cautionThe chief added there was no active threat in the area — he said several law enforcement agencies have responded to the scene.

“We have plenty of people assisting us, so I hope we can develop a suspect or suspects very soon,” Jackson said.

Wednesday’s shooting was the third to take place on Clay Street this year, police data shows, but the first in which a victim was reported injured or dead.

It also became Annapolis Police’s second homicide investigation of 2024, just more than a month after a 16-year-old boy was found dead in a relative’s home in Parole.
