Two months ago a new addition was added to the Boulder aesthetic: The Pearl Street Mall Stationary Bike.

After Ironman Boulder, the Pearl Street Mall stationary bike was found chained to a rack in the middle of the square. The lonely bike sat there for two months awaiting a rider. On Tuesday, the Pearl Street Mall stationary bike finally got taken for a ride, by the Boulder police. The boys in blue cut the cable that locked the stationary bike to the bike rack, and carried it away. Most people of Boulder thought Pearl Street Mall stationary bike was an exhibit appealing to exercise, and this was a blatant exorcism of that display. The bike was first spotted outside of the Boulder Main Public Library, but was soon moved to its known place on 11th and Pearl around the Ironman Boulder triathlon. The Pearl Street Mall stationary bike blew up on Twitter thanks to a sign that was hung around the time of the triathlon. “Ironman participants and anyone else: C’mon people! Let’s see if we can do 112 miles by Sunday night,” the sign read. “Work it! (Heart) Richard Simmons. Post and Share! #SitSpinPearl #WorkItBoulder #WorthlessNWeakBOCO #KeepBoulderWeird.” Pearl Street Stationary Bike Everyone assumed it was for Ironman due to the sign, but after the Pearl Street Mall stationary bike stuck around weeks later, the bike became the norm. Resident Andrew Baron was the first to start tweeting about the bike, and even created a Twitter account on its behalf. There was a lot of speculation surrounding the bike. Whether it was paying homage to Ironman participants or was just an overall testament to athleticism and healthy lifestyles, it became a norm in Boulder. Ryan Ergo, who works at Salt, a business across the street from the bike, noticed as soon as it was put in. “I never saw anyone ride it, I see a lot of people notice it, but it’s sort of become obsolete. It’s just a part of the corner now.” Pearl Street Stationary Bike Well, now the bike is gone. So the corner is missing a little piece of uniqueness. The last reading of the bike’s odometer (recorded on social media) was 3,215.3 miles. For two months, the Pearl Street Mall stationary bike was a fun part of Boulder. The removed bike won't really be missed though, it seems. But hey! It was fun while it lasted! Source: Boulder Daily Camera
