Matching the Jordan Center atmosphere this Friday against Michigan as opposed to last Friday against Iowa will be difficult; you just can’t redo a No. 1 vs. No. 2.

But the plus this weekend for wrestling fans is that they get to watch top-ranked Penn State perform twice. The Nittany Lions entertain No. 14 Michigan (5-4/2-4) at 6 p.m. Friday on BTN and host No. 24 Maryland (8-7/3-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rec Hall.

Maryland hosts Rutgers on Friday night before trekking to State College, so there’s a good chance the Terps will check in at 8-8/3-3.

There will be entertaining bouts in each, just not as many as the Penn State-Iowa clash where top-10 wrestlers were beyond prevalent. And the results will be the same. The Nittany Lions undoubtedly will improve to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference as well as up the program’s winning streak to 68 well before Sunday’s Super Bowl even kicks off.

“I think these (double-dual) weekends are really good training for the national tournament and the conference where you have a multiple-day tournament, so we look at it all as training,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said this week.

“Obviously, Michigan’s one of the top programs in the country and has been forever. So we’re looking forward to that match — another match in the Jordan Center — and then being able to turn around and wrestle Maryland, who’s wrestling really well. They’ve done a really good job there and they’re very competitive.”

141: Penn State’s Beau Bartlett (13-0) vs. Michigan’s Sergio Lemley (6-3): This would be a No. 3 vs. No. 12 matchup and both of Bartlett’s victories over Lemley last season were close … 7-5 in the dual and 5-4 in the B1Gs.

157: Penn State’s Tyler Kasak (12-0) vs. Michigan’s Chase Saldate (9-6 ): This is another challenging weekend for Kasak, the country’s new No. 1-ranked wrestler at 157, with two strong competitors. Saldate is only 9-6 but he’s scrappy and funky and went 12 minutes last season with PSU’s Levi Haines before losing on a last-second reversal in the dual at Michigan State prior to his transfer to spend his final year with the Wolverines.

197: Penn State’s Josh Barr (10-1) vs. Michigan’s Jacob Cardenas (14-0 ): This is the marquee bout at the BJC. Cardenas, the Cornell graduate, is a two-time All-America (4th and 8th the past two seasons) and a three-time qualifier. The Bergen Catholic grad from New Jersey was 71-22 at Cornell and his highlight move is a blast double-leg takedown. Barr suffered his first loss last week to No. 1-ranked Stephen Buchanan, but Sanderson believes that Barr is improving each week and still can jump levels prior to the nationals. FloWrestling has labeled the 197-pound showdown as “Barr-denas.” Catchy.

285: Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet (13-0) vs Michigan’s Josh Heindselman (17-1): Heindselman is an Oklahoma grad who went 82-46 over five years with the Sooners. He’s ranked eighth and is having an excellent season. He’s not in the Gable Steveson/Wyatt Hendrickson class but he’ll be a good test for Kerkvliet. Sanderson was pleased when Rutgers’ Yaraslau Slavikouski took Kerkvliet the entire seven minutes. Kerkvliet last week thumped Iowa’s Ben Keuter 12-2 and Heindselman beat Keuter 4-2 recently.

133: Penn State’s Braeden Davis (7-2) vs. Maryland’s Braxton Brown (16-2 ): Sanderson said it was 50-50 that Davis could compete this weekend. He is listed to wrestle but if he does not, he would be replaced by Kurt McHenry or Kyison Garcia. Brown last season beat Penn State’s Baylor Shunk in the dual meet as Aaron Nagao was out with an illness. No. 11 Brown, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is a tough out.

157: Kasak vs. Maryland’s Ethen Miller (17-0): Miller, the two-time NCAA qualifier, is enjoying his best season to date. His top wins this year are over Joey Blaze of Purdue, UM’s Saldate and Illinois’ Jason Kraisser. Kasak, of course, is coming off of his big win over then-No. 1 Jacori Teemer of Iowa. One caveat: Maryland is also listing Kevin Schork at 157 for this weekend.

184: Penn State’s Carter Starocci (13-0) vs. Jaxon Smith (14-4 ): Starocci clearly is the favorite but it’s good for the four-time NCAA champ to face physically strong and aggressive wrestlers such as Smith, ranked 11th. Starocci downed Iowa’s Angelo Ferrari last week 3-1 and Ferrari showed great strength and amazing flexibility, but Starocci had firm control of the bout.

285: Kerkvliet vs. Maryland’s Seth Nevills (13-3): These two would have rolled around a good bit in the Penn State room prior to Nevills’ transfer, and Nevills is having his best season yet. Nevills has beaten Pitt’s Dayton Pitzer but has lost to Heindselman, Illinois’ Luke Luffman and Keuter, all by close margins.

RECRUITING NOTES: Bishop McCort junior Jax Forrest selected Oklahoma State as his college choice on Thursday. That followed teammate Bo Bassett’s announcement to Iowa and, earlier, Sam Herring’s commitment to Penn State. McCort and Faith Christian should square off in a national 1 vs. 2 dual in Saturday’s finals of the PIAA Team Championships at Altoona Area Field House. Looking at Forrest’s pick, he chose the Cowboys over Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State. With Marcus Blaze expected to slot into the Nittany Lion lineup next season at 141, it wasn’t a good fit for Forrest.
