Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has called the 2024/25 season the most difficult of his 16-year managerial career, citing a major decline in form that saw the defending champions crash out of the Premier League title race and suffer an early Champions League exit.

Injuries, fatigue and inconsistency undermine campaign

Having lifted four successive Premier League trophies, Guardiola admitted that the demands of the current season, both emotionally and tactically, surpassed anything he had previously faced at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or City.

“It’s been the most difficult, that’s for sure,” the Spaniard said during a pre-match press briefing ahead of City’s trip to relegated Southampton. “When you don’t win, it’s more demanding emotionally, in preparation, and in the squad’s mood.”

Champions League exit to Real Madrid deepens woes

City were knocked out in the Champions League knockout playoffs by Real Madrid, while domestic performances dipped from late October.

Guardiola pointed to a lack of energy, a string of injuries, including midfield general Rodri and a general drop in performance levels as key contributors to their struggles. “I didn’t find the way to let them feel comfortable and win games,” he admitted.

Guardiola accepts responsibility for underwhelming season

The 54-year-old tactician took personal responsibility for the downturn, stating: “We had a lot of injuries; we didn’t have the energy… I was not good enough to find a way, but we didn’t give up.”

Eyes still on Champions League spot and FA Cup glory

Despite the setbacks, Guardiola’s side remains in contention for a top-five finish and will compete in the FA Cup final and Club World Cup, an opportunity to salvage pride and silverware.

“We’re still fighting to qualify for the Champions League—that is a big, big prize—and the FA Cup,” he added.

Currently third in the Premier League, City are hoping to close out the season with renewed momentum, even as Guardiola reflects on what he considers the most trying period of his managerial journey.
