DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (7News) — A tragic accident on Addison Road South has claimed the life of 3-year-old Zoey Rose Marie Harrison. The young girl was riding with her mother, Nishia Robinson, on Friday evening when their vehicle was struck by a driver fleeing a police traffic stop at high speed. Robinson expressed her grief and anger, stating, "She wants that driver to get life." She also emphasized that if police were at fault, "they too should be held accountable." The incident began when a District Heights police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a missing tag. The driver fled, and moments later, a Capitol Heights police officer spotted the car and initiated a pursuit. The crash occurred shortly thereafter. County Councilmember Krystal Oriadha, representing the area where the crash occurred, supports the bill, stating, "I think we need to have a hard look at what triggers an officer to chase a vehicle." Oriadha also stressed the importance of understanding the consequences of fleeing from the police. Jason Johnson of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund attributed the responsibility for Zoey's death to the driver who fled, saying, "The danger was the individuals who chose to flee law enforcement and when they do that they’re driving very very dangerously recklessly in an effort to get away from law enforcement and when they do that they cause these horrific accidents that result in the death of people just minding their own business."
