Weeks after a building permit was issued for Jacksonville’s first Raising Cane’s , a second restaurant is in the works, this one in a potential redevelopment of Jacksonville’s storied – and dilapidated – Regency Square Mall .

According to a service availability request filed with JEA on Jan. 29, the popular chain known for its chicken fingers is exploring a restaurant at an outparcel in what is now the mall’s parking lot.

An application and site plan filed with JEA show a 2,786-square-foot restaurant with 75 seats and a two-lane drive-thru on the east side of the mall’s main entrance off Atlantic Boulevard.

Plans for the Regency-area restaurant come as work begins on the chain’s first Northeast Florida restaurant at 8308 Merchants Way, near Gator’s Dockside in the Epic Theaters-anchored Oakleaf Station in Southwest Jacksonville.

A building permit for that restaurant, a 2,899-square-foot building with two drive-thru lanes, was issued in early December.

Founded in 1996 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the restaurant is known for its limited menu of fried chicken fingers and signature Cane’s sauce — a secret recipe known only to its managers. Its combo meals — available with two, three, four or six chicken fingers — come with crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and coleslaw. A chicken sandwich made with three chicken fingers is also available.

Raising Cane’s — which made its Florida debut in Miami’s South Beach area in early 2022 — has 18 locations in the Sunshine State, including Gainesville and Daytona Beach, the closest restaurants to Jacksonville, according to the company’s website. Other Raising Cane’s can be found in the Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando and South Florida areas.
