SPRINGFIELD — The state’s law enforcement oversight authority suspended a city police officer days after he was arrested and charged with sexual assault and enticing a minor while he worked as an assistant coach at a Connecticut high school. The Massachusetts Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Commission issued an immediate suspension of Justin Perez’s certification after it learned he had been charged with a felony offense. He will be required to relinquish his uniform, badge, firearm, cruiser and any other trappings of his job as an officer. Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers on Thursday announced he had suspended Perez for five days — the maximum penalty allowed under civil service.
