Hopefully, there will be a football game this weekend.

Colorado (CU) and Nebraska will meet this weekend in a renewal of a rivalry that dates back to the Big 8. At least they will if the game isn't called off due to inclement weather, as was Nebraska's first game of the season against Akron.

Nebraska hasn't played a game and the team has a new coach, Scott Frost. So ... we don't really have any idea what this team is going to do. With that being said, let's preview this bad boy!

Offense

CU's offense is led by redshirt junior quarterback Steven Montez, who is in his second year as a full-time starter. Montez spent much of last season running for his life and trying to do too much. So far in 2018, he looks calmer and more confident. He has always had the physical tools to be a great quarterback, but his decision making was questionable. He only had three incompletions in the Rocky Mountain Showdown last weekend, and two of those were drops (the other was an interception).

The task of replacing Phillip Lindsay has been left to Virginia Tech transfer Travon McMillian and former walk-on Kyle Evans. They both looked fine against CSU's defense at the Showdown, which is to say we have no idea how they'll look against a real defense.

The current receiving unit looks even better, with Laviska Shenault looking like a legitimate star, Juwann Winfree and K.D. Nixon looking good enough to keep other teams from doubling Shenault, and Jay McIntyre continuing to be solid enough that we won't complain about him being the coach's kid.

CU's offensive line failed to impress last year, but this year's group has improved greatly. Freshman Colby Pursell has stepped in and made the center spot his own. Right-guard Tim Lynott is the best pure offensive lineman on the team. Brett Tonz, Aaron Haigler, and Josh Kaiser are all experienced and solid.

The main task for CU's offense against Nebraska will be staying focused on the game and not letting the moment get to them, especially Montez and Purcell. Lincoln will be earsplittingly loud, so communication between center and quarterback will be paramount. If Pursell plays like a freshman, or if Montez starts trying to do too much, this game could go sideways for the Buffs in a hurry.

Nebraska's offense, on the other hand, is a group of mystery men, who we will find out the identities of at a later date.

Defense

Colorado defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot is in his second year with the Buffs, and he has a lot to prove after a lackluster effort in 2017.

Defensive tackle Javier Edwards looks more mobile in the middle of CU's three-man defensive front. With Mustafa Johnson, Israel Antwine, Chris Mulumba, Lyle Tuiloma, Jase Franke, and Terrance Lang all contributing, the depth seems to be there along the defensive line as well.

Nate Landman was a revelation in the Rocky Mountain Showdown with 13 tackles and an interception. Rick Gamboa was his usual composed self and Jacob Callier, Drew Lewis, Carson Wells, and Nu'umoto Falo Jr. looked good as pass-rushing outside linebackers. Davion Taylor looks the part as a hybrid safety-linebacker. As long as Nebraska doesn't have completely overpowering athletes on offense, the linebackers should be fine.

In the secondary, Delrick Abrams Jr. is CU's number one cornerback, leaving Trey Udoffia and Dante Wigley to fight for the other spot. Neither has looked overwhelmingly impressive thus far. Evan Worthington and Nick Fisher are returning senior safeties with great instincts. The secondary is always one of CU's strongest units, which makes sense given Mike MacIntyre is a former cornerback.

Eliot will have to prove last year's struggles are behind him if CU is to come away from Lincoln with a win. He has a young, hungry core to work with, but Nebraska head coach Scott Frost, a former Oregon offensive coordinator, didn't lose a game as head coach of the University of Central Florida last season. He's going to throw some weird stuff at CU and the defense better be prepared.

Nebraska's defense could be 11 corn stalks with smiley faces painted on them for all we know.

Is this finally the year that Pat Bowlen is inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Sam is really cool and you should be friends with him. He can't believe they let him write his own bio either! When Sam isn’t writing words, he’s usually reading books, playing sports, skiing, camping and rafting. Just kidding, usually he’s daydreaming. He lives in the woods.
