Publix Super Markets opened its first Virginia Beach store Thursday morning.

The 49,000-square-foot grocery store at Hickman Place at 2200 General Booth Blvd. in the Red Mill shopping district features a full-service deli counter selling subs and fried chicken, gourmet soups from a daily soup bar and fresh hand-rolled sushi, according to a news release. Customers will also find more than 200 varieties of artisan cheese as well as olives, charcuterie, hummus and traditional deli items in addition to appetizers, entrees and side dishes.

Customers can order cuts the way they like at the meat department. Fresh seafood is delivered throughout the week. The store also has a bakery and wine section. In additional to organic and conventional produce, the store carries seasonal locally grown items as well as exotic choices. The floral department employs a specialist to create arrangements for special occasions.

The store, managed by Greg Switzer, employs about 140 workers. It is equipped with a full-service pharmacy with a drive-thru.

The popular Florida-based chain entered the Hampton Roads market near Williamsburg in 2018 and opened a Suffolk location in December 2023. Publix plans to open another store in Chesapeake in early 2025 .
