QB Trevor Lawrence shared what he's seeing from the Jaguars' offensive line unit during offseason programs.
During this portion of the NFL offseason, it can be difficult to evaluate offensive line play with the pads not being on. But
Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback Trevor Lawrence likes what he has seen from this unit during OTAs and minicamp. "I think it's still important for communication, identification with the defense,"
Lawrence said after Thursday's practice . "Working games, passing off games. Yes, the physical side of some of the one-on-one blocks, I think the defensive line is always at an advantage when you're in no pads. It's hard, there's nothing to grab on to, there's nothing to really anchor in on. "So that's difficult, but as far as just the mental part of the game, your steps, your footwork, getting to linebackers, being physical, violent with your hands, all of that stuff, I think the guys have been awesome. They've been great." Since Liam Coen took over as the
Jaguars ' head coach,
he has been direct in saying that the offensive line play for the Jaguars has to improve this season. A key part of the success that the Tampa Bay offense had last season under Coen was, in part, due to the blocking up front. To help accomplish this, and get that improved play out of this unit, GM James Gladstone added heavily to the offensive line unit this offseason, making four additions in free agency and two more in the NFL draft. This influx of new players has added a lot of versatility and greatly increased the competition. Although we don't know what exact configurations have been utilized,
it has been reported that the Jaguars have done a lot of mixing and matching as they search for their best five. "There's some stuff to clean up, but that's all of us," added Lawrence. "I'm excited. Obviously you learn a lot more once the pads come on, 100%, but I think the guys took some big steps. Like I said, the system puts a lot on those guys up front to really communicate and know what they're doing and there's a lot of adjustments. It gives us a lot of answers, but you have to know it and those guys have done a great job of being prepared." While, naturally, all eyes will be fixated on Lawrence and the Jaguars' receivers, consistent success for any offense begins up front with the offensive line providing a steady running game to lean on, to keep the offense out of predictable passing situations, and time in the pocket for the quarterback.
