RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina officials have announced plans for a bridge at a problematic Raleigh intersection near a Walmart.

The plan is aimed at the intersection of New Hope Church Road at St. Albans Drive — a spot where railroad tracks also intersect New Hope Church Road.

Currently, St. Albans Drive connects right beside the CSX railroad tracks.

A new bridge project that would carry cars and pedestrians is planned to cost at least $27 million, according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The section is less than a block from a Walmart store and St. Albans Drive is used by many drivers to access the store and nearby Atlantic Avenue.

Officials said Friday a $19 million contract for the bridge was awarded to S.T. Wooten of Wilson.

The overall project costs also include buying land, updating traffic signals, grading, drainage, and paving.

Officials said “substantial” progress was expected by the fall of 2027 but a completion date was not released.

Construction could start later this month.
