Cora also noted Rafael Devers is unlikely to take over at third base if Bregman goes on the injured list, but he didn't rule out bringing up shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer.

The injury occurred when Bregman singled off Orioles pitcher Cade Povich and took a big turn around first base before returning to the bag. He signaled for a trainer and almost immediately walked off the field into the locker room.

The Orioles and Red Sox were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, but the second game was rained out. They rescheduled it for Saturday, with the first game starting at 1:10 p.m. ET.

"Obviously, it's just day to day. I feel like we'll know a lot more tomorrow after sleeping and seeing how it presents in the morning. But all my strength is still there right now, which is good so far. So it's just kind of a day-to-day thing at this point and kind of see when I wake up tomorrow how it feels."

In describing the injury, Bregman went on to say he had a quad injury during the 2021 season with the Houston Astros that felt "way worse" than this one. He spent more than two months on the IL due to that injury.

Losing Bregman for any length of time is a huge blow to Boston's lineup. He is hitting .299/.385/.553 and is tied for second on the team with 11 homers in 51 games.

Eric Sogard is starting at third base in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Mayer, the No. 3 prospect in Boston's farm system coming into 2025, is hitting .271/.347/.471 with nine homers in 43 games at Triple-A.
