COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn (SC-06) is speaking with South Carolinians Wednesday morning to explore the potential impacts of cuts to Medicaid. The roundtable is happening at 11 a.m. at the South Carolina Hospital Association on Center Point Road in Columbia. Various public health officials and community leaders are expected to attend. Clyburn is hosting this discussion while President Donald Trump’s priority bill, a multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package called the “One Big Beautiful Bill”, navigates through Congress. The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly voted 215-214 to pass the bill in the early morning of Thursday, May 22. Central to the “One Big Beautiful Bill” is the extension of around $4.5 trillion in tax breaks first passed in Trump’s first term in 2017 while also adding some new ones including no taxes on tips, overtime pay, car loan interest and others. The Associated Press (AP) noted the lost tax revenue is largely expected to be made up by changing Medicaid and the SNAP food stamps program, primarily by adding work requirements to those receiving benefits. Critics of the bill, primarily Democrats, have argued the new requirements will cause millions of Americans to lose Medicaid coverage. Clyburn’s office said the cuts “could eliminate health coverage for at least 13.7 million Americans.” Currently, Medicaid provides almost free health care to over 70 million Americans especially since the program was expanded under the Affordable Care Act, according to the AP.
