Local residents are being asked to join millions around the globe taking part in the 2025 Great Backyard Bird Count .

Held from Friday, Feb. 14 through Monday, Feb. 17, the observations that result will help scientists better understand global bird migrations, noted the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, which is working to coordinate state events.

“Your participation matters and your bird count contributes to a global study that helps protect bird populations all over the world,” state officials said. “The Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to connect with birds, nature and each other while contributing to science.”

Participants can use the Merlin Bird ID app to help identify the birds and the eBird Mobile app to enter sightings, the officials said.

Arlington County, meanwhile has an online checklist of bird species that have been found locally over time.

Participants can conduct their count anywhere, but a number of state parks in Virginia are hosting count-related events.

The Great Backyard Bird Count was launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. It expanded to Canada in 2009 and went global in 2013.
