Resilience and Watershed Plans

How safe is Gulfport when a natural disaster strikes?

Following the Spirit of Gulfport awards at the Dec. 3 Gulfport City Council meeting, Advanced Engineering and Design explained their work on a vulnerability assessment and a watershed management plan.

The vulnerability assessment focuses on how resilient the City is to disasters. This includes community and emergency facilities, infrastructure, natural and historical facilities, and transportation. The group said it will complete its final assessment by Oct. 31, 2025. The presentation focused on background research, and the aspects of the city that Advanced Engineering and Design will inspect for resilience.

The watershed management plan examines how the Gulfport watershed operates, and the infrastructure used to deal with water. Additionally, the company talked about issues with the current watershed, including how the boundaries of the watershed don’t match Gulfport’s boundaries. Along with this, the group will research issues with daytime flooding along the shoreline. This plan will complete by the fall of 2025.
