Locally family-owned and -operated, Pelon’s Baja Grill is a super-fresh, super-flavorful, and super-friendly California Baja-style Mexican restaurant and bar.

“The Best Cali-Style Mexican Food & Fish Tacos East of Baja!” is Pelon's motto, and while I've never been to Baja, I believe it. In November, the Muscara family, owners of Pelon’s Baja Grill, opened their third location in the new Hickman Place shopping center at the corner of Nimmo Parkway and General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach. We are so thrilled they’re here—and as is evidenced by the lunch crowd I observed yesterday, so is everyone else. I can’t help coming back again and again; I just can’t get enough of this place.

The Restaurant

The original restaurant, which opened in 2015, is located at the Oceanfront. The second location opened in 2017 in Norfolk. And now we have our very own down here at the South End! As you enter this location, it feels like a fashionably chic fast-food restaurant. You’re kindly welcomed by the staff and faced with a wonderful wall of menu items from which to choose. The décor is industrial steel meets surfer; it works and is relaxed (if I knew any surfer terms this would be the perfect place to insert one).

There are a plethora of starters, entrees, “sidekicks," and desserts from which to choose. Freshly made chunky guacamole with chips is a favorite appetizer; add the warm, rich, and creamy queso to make it complete. I can’t remember the last time I saw Cerviche on a menu (yum!), and the Mexican street corn-on-the-cob is a definite must-try (choose the sriracha flavor if you want to add a kick!).

Pelon’s is known for their fish tacos, which are made of breaded fried white fish topped with shredded green cabbage, salsa Fresca, and Baja sauce enveloped in a light corn tortilla. It is a mouthful of freshness, flavor, and texture. And their Baja sauce could be poured on anything! The shrimp tacos are just as delicious. Everything is served with the freshest-of-fresh seafood, chicken, and beef. Plus, they offer vegan and gluten-free menu options as well.

The Bar/Specials

I love the return of a good happy hour, and Pelon’s does not disappoint. Happy Hour is every day from 3 to 6 p.m., and they have awesome deals on both import and domestic bottled beers, margaritas, wine, and tacos. Not only are the Happy Hour deals great, Pelon’s offers featured specials (see above), in addition to the daily specials. Now how can you pass up a great deal on great food and cocktails?

Pelon’s Baja Grill Red Mill is located at 2212 General Booth Blvd. Suite 200, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.
