This year’s hot item at Mamie’s Apothecary is magnesium body butter.

You’re about to be faced with numerous options for holiday shopping. One that you might want to consider is Richmond’s Small Business Saturday.

On Saturday, you can peruse the stores around the city and be presented with a host of options you won’t find on Amazon — or see everyone else carrying.

Collin Lofland, manager and buyer for Mamie’s Apothecary —a wellness shop in Carytown specializing in locally made gifts, like Maven Theory fragrances and other small batch items made by independent creators — is gearing up for the holiday weekend in Carytown.

Lofland said, “We’re not a big retailer who broadcasts crazy deals. But most of the increase in traffic is for Small Business Saturday. More people come to Carytown for that reason. The holidays are our biggest season, and that’s what keeps us going — it definitely brings in the most sales throughout the year.”

Stores in Carytown are gearing up for the weekend, beginning promotions on social media where you can find out about participation, hours of operation and special deals or discounts on select products. Lofland estimates that holiday shopping makes up half of the shop’s annual sales.

“We’re hoping sales are up this year. We’re hoping that the election year doesn’t influence shoppers at all,” Lofland said. “We’re hoping it’ll be a good year with more people supporting local businesses and small businesses. We like to be a part of what most of Carytown’s commerce community does.”

Collin Lofland is seen arranging shelves at Mamie’s Apothecary.

In 2023, the reported projected spending in the U.S. from those who shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday was around $17 billion, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration .

The shopping day is squeezed between Black Friday, which launches the post-Thanksgiving retail rush, and Cyber Monday. For last year’s holiday season, e-commerce accounted for about 17.1% of all nonadjusted retail sales in the fourth quarter, Commerce Department data shows.

As far as the shopping outlook for the holidays this year, Virginians are expected to spend a little more this year.

Nationally, inflation is 2.6%, down considerably since last year, according to a recent holiday shopping report from Roanoke College. Annual wage growth averaged 3.9% in the third quarter. With an improved financial situation from reduced inflation and strong employment, Virginians plan to buy more this holiday season than last, according to the report.

The average Virginian plans to spend about $1,100 between gifts for others, experiences, and other non-gift purchases, up by more than $100 from 2023. Most of that spending is expected to be on traditional gifts ($508), followed by experiences ($312) such as entertainment at home and socializing away from home, and non-gift purchases such as holiday decorations ($265), according to the report.

An estimated 183.4 million people will shop in U.S. stores and online between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation and consumer research firm Prosper Insights & Analytics.

This year, products formulated to relax and pamper the body are looking like big sellers at Mamie’s.

Lofland said, “The hot item this year is our magnesium butter that we have. It’s made by a brand called Roots and Leaves, and it’s a shea and mango butter topical ($25) for your body to help with sleep, stress, pain and anxiety. The magnesium is the active ingredient and it’s a product with many health benefits, and it’s a mineral that we’re naturally deficient in, that helps with many bodily functions. It’s already our top seller, but I think this Christmas, it’ll definitely fly.”

A display of skincare is seen at Mamie’s Apothecary.

Aside from padding your holiday shopping list, Small Business Saturday helps anchor a community or neighborhood by supporting commerce there.

Diana McMahon is the vice president of InUnison of Central Virginia, formerly known as the Retail Merchants Association of Richmond.

“Local businesses play a vital role in our community — creating jobs, bringing unique character to our neighborhoods and supporting our local economy. As we’ve seen several beloved local businesses recently close their doors, it’s more important than ever to come together to support independent businesses,” she said. “At InUnison, we’re encouraging shoppers to use our Find Local directory to quickly and easily discover and support local businesses. Every purchase made with a small business helps strengthen the community and ensures these businesses continue to flourish.”
