Washington state is about to lose eight Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores. The closure of over 100 sites across the country was approved last week in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Rite Aid had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September after cutting its debt and shutting stores across the country, including Bartell stores in downtown Seattle and University Village earlier this year. But as it again files for bankruptcy protection , the company said it will now sell or eventually close all of its Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs locations. Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs will also close its distribution center in Des Moines, laying off 131 employees starting June 4, the Kent Reporter reported. The eight Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores will remain open temporarily, but no inventory will come in, so customers should expect bare shelves, FOX 13 reported . The company said it will make a “smooth transfer” of customer prescriptions as it re-enters bankruptcy proceedings. It is not known when the eight Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores will close. Materials from The Seattle Times archives were used in this report.
