This is a running analysis of the San Francisco 49ers’ moves and key departures — emphasis on the departures — during this season of free agency. The early negotiating window began Monday at 9 a.m. PT and the NFL’s new league year, when teams can formally sign free agents who played elsewhere in 2025, began Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT.

49ers additions

LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

March 14: The longtime 49ers linebacker and special teamer will sign a one-year deal with the New York Giants, a league source confirmed. Flannigan-Fowles arrived in San Francisco as an undrafted rookie in 2019, switched positions from safety to linebacker and played 616 defensive snaps over the last five seasons.

T Charlie Heck

March 13: Heck, who started the 49ers’ final two games at left tackle, is signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his agent confirmed. The 49ers signed Heck off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad late last season as a replacement for injured Trent Williams and Jaylon Moore.

LS Jon Weeks

March 13: The 49ers signed Weeks, who had been the Houston Texans’ long snapper since 2010, to a one-year deal, the team announced. Weeks, 39, will replace Taybor Pepper, who was released Thursday. Weeks has played in 258 NFL games. He made the Pro Bowl in 2015.

LS Taybor Pepper

March 13: The 49ers plan to release Taybor Pepper, their long snapper since the 2020 season, his agent confirmed. Pepper has played in every game since he was added to the roster in October 2020. The 49ers have a new special teams coordinator, Brant Boyer, this season and revamping the long under-performing special teams is a priority.

Thank you Faithful! Wanted to end my career with the 49ers, but I’ve still got some years left in the tank.

QB Brandon Allen

March 13: The Tennessee Titans are signing Allen to a one-year deal, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe confirmed. Allen spent the last two seasons as a backup in San Francisco with his lone start coming in last season’s 38-10 loss to Green Bay. The 49ers agreed to terms with a new backup quarterback, Mac Jones, on Wednesday.

CB Isaac Yiadom

March 13: Yiadom, who started five games for the 49ers last season, will be signing a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, his agent reported. Yiadom began the 2024 season as the 49ers’ third cornerback, a job that was eventually taken over by promising rookie Renardo Green. He spent two seasons in New Orleans before joining the 49ers a year ago.

QB Mac Jones

March 12: The 49ers agreed to a two-year deal with Jones, one of the quarterbacks who caught Kyle Shanahan’s eye during the 2021 draft process. Jones, who most recently played in Jacksonville, will back up Brock Purdy, with whom he shares several traits, including processing speed and decision-making. The only other quarterback currently on the roster is 2024 undrafted rookie Tanner Mordecai.

DTs Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins

March 12: The 49ers officially released Hargrave and Collins on Wednesday with post-June 1 designations just as the new league year began at 1 p.m. PT. Both players were immediately swooped up. Hargrave agreed to a two-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings worth $30 million, a team source told The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, while Collins has a two-year, $20 million deal with the Cleveland Browns, according to multiple reports.

CB Tre Brown

March 12: The 49ers and Brown, a fourth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, agreed to terms on a one-year deal, his agency reported. Brown is 5-foot-10, 185 pounds and started 13 games in Seattle over the past four seasons. The 27-year-old mostly has been an outside cornerback and will compete with Darrell Luter Jr., Tre Avery and Chase Lucas for a spot in the rotation behind Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green.

WR Demarcus Robinson

March 11: The 49ers and Los Angeles Rams wideout Demarcus Robinson have agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $9.5 million, a league source confirmed. Robinson, 30, started all 17 games last season, setting career highs in catches (31), receiving yards (505) and touchdowns (7). The similarities between the 49ers’ and Rams’ offenses ought to make for a smooth transition, which will be important early in the season when Brandon Aiyuk likely will be recovering from his October ACL tear.

S Jason Pinnock

March 11: The 49ers are signing New York Giants defensive back Jason Pinnock to a one-year deal, a league source confirmed. Pinnock, 25, was a fifth-round pick by the New York Jets in 2021. When he was waived the following year, the Giants claimed him. He’s started 16 games at safety for the Giants the last two seasons.

DE Leonard Floyd

March 11: Floyd and the Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms one a one-year, $10 million deal, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports. That means it will be a homecoming of sorts for Floyd, a Georgia native who played at the University of Georgia.

LB Luke Gifford

March 11: The 49ers are set to sign the former Cowboys and Titans linebacker to a one-year deal, according to a league source. Gifford, 29, has been a special teams ace since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He should be an asset for incoming special teams coordinator Brant Boyer.

LB Curtis Robinson

March 11: The 49ers won’t tender the restricted free agent, but they will be signing him to a one-year deal, his agent said Tuesday. Robinson, the team’s 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, is recovering from a September ACL tear. General manager John Lynch said recently that the recovery is going well.

DE Leonard Floyd

March 11: The 49ers plan to release Floyd, 32, according to a league source. Floyd finished second on the team with 8 1/2 sacks last season, and perhaps even more notable, was one of the few 49ers who played in all 17 games. Floyd, in fact, has played in every game possible since 2018. Three of the four defensive linemen who started in Week 1 last season are set to be released: Floyd, Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins.

S Richie Grant

March 11: The 49ers agreed to terms with Grant, a 2021 second-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons, on a one-year deal, a league source said. Grant, 27, has started 33 games in Atlanta over the last four seasons, though just one last year. He did log 349 special teams snaps last season, hinting at his 2025 role with the 49ers.

RB Jordan Mason

March 11:The team is placing a second-round tender on restricted free agent Mason, according to a league source. That means a team that signs Mason, the 49ers’ leading rusher in 2024, would have to give the 49ers a second-round pick. If not, then San Francisco will owe Mason $5.35 million for the upcoming season. Mason ran for 789 yards and three touchdowns last season while filling in for the injured Christian McCaffrey before an ankle injury forced him to miss the final five games. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry.

FB Kyle Juszczyk

March 10: The 49ers informed Juszczyk, the longest-tenured 49er, that he would be released, according to a team source. The nine-time Pro Bowl selection will now become a free agent. He was a controversial signing in 2017 — who pays that much for a fullback? — but ended up being the best player of San Francisco’s free agency class that year. Still, the 49ers foreshadowed his departure when they asked him to take a pay cut last year and perhaps by signing a tight end, Luke Farrell, earlier in the day. That may signal a move from two-running back formations to more two-tight end sets.

DT Kevin Givens

March 10:The 49ers will re-sign Givens to a one-year deal, league sources told The Athletic. The move gives them some semblance of depth on a defensive line that may not have tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins in 2025. Both are expected to be cut later this week, though it’s possible Collins could be traded. Givens, who’s been with the 49ers since 2019, battled an adductor injury last year and finished with 3 1/2 sacks in eight games.

LB Dre Greenlaw

March 10: Greenlaw has agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos, The Athletic’s Diana Russini was first to report. The deal is for three years and $35 million, a team source told The Athletic’s Michael Silver. The 49ers had been trying to bring Greenlaw back since the end of the regular season, but the Broncos offered him a salary — and a multi-year deal — San Francisco could not match. The move leaves the team with Fred Warner at middle linebacker and Dee Winters as the top candidate to play Greenlaw’s weakside spot.

The Broncos are signing LB Dre Greenlaw, per source.

CB Charvarius Ward

March 10: Ward intends to sign a three-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts that’s worth $60 million, he told The Athletic’s Mike Silver. Ward was expected to bolt after three seasons in San Francisco due to the demand at his position and the trauma he experienced last year here following the death of his 1-year-old daughter. His departure leaves the 49ers with Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green as the top cornerbacks and the team in need of finding a No. 3.

QB Joshua Dobbs

March 10: Dobbs, who spent one season in San Francisco, agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the New England Patriots, his agent reported. The 49ers have two quarterbacks signed for 2025 — Brock Purdy and 2024 rookie Tanner Mordecai. They also could bring back free agent Brandon Allen, who spent most of last season as the No. 2 QB.

RB Patrick Taylor Jr.

March 10: The 49ers agreed to a one-year deal with Taylor, who was deep on the depth chart to begin the 2024 season but who ended up starting a Week 16 game in Miami after injuries ravaged the position. He also logged 120 snaps on special teams.

G Aaron Banks

March 10: Like Jaylon Moore earlier in the day, the lack of quality guards in free agency and the draft led to a huge payday for Banks. He’s agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth as much as $77 million, a source confirmed to The Athletic. The 49ers already have re-signed Ben Bartch on a one-year deal. He’ll at least compete at Banks’ left guard spot during the upcoming offseason.

TE Luke Farrell

March 10: The 49ers’ first free-agent addition of the week is ex-Jacksonville Jaguar Farrell, who agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth as much as $20.5 million, a source told The Athletic. Farrell hasn’t been much of a pass catcher to this point. Last season, he had just 12 receptions for 67 yards and he has yet to score a touchdown in four years in the league. Like last year’s No. 2 tight end, Eric Saubert, Farrell’s strength appears to be in blocking. The bulk of his snaps have come as an in-line tight end.

S Talanoa Hufanga

March 10: The 49ers lose another player to the AFC West. Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Nick Kosmider, the Denver Broncos agreed to terms with Hufanga on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million, with $30 million guaranteed. Hufanga returned from a 2023 ACL injury this past season only to suffer a wrist injury in Week 5. He returned in Week 14 wearing a protective cast and played the rest of the season. The 49ers’ top two safeties are now Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha. They could add another safety in a draft considered solid at the position.

The Broncos are signing S Talanoa Hufanga, per source.

T Jaylon Moore

March 10: According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, the Kansas City Chiefs are poised to sign Moore to a two-year deal worth $15 million a year. The 49ers had been interested in re-signing Moore, 27, who has started 12 games over the past four seasons, most of them for often-injured Trent Williams at left tackle.

RB Elijah Mitchell

March 10: The Chiefs agreed to terms with Mitchell to a one-year deal, The Athletic confirmed. He led the 49ers in rushing as a rookie in 2021, finishing with 963 yards and five touchdowns. His career, however, has been marked by injuries since, including in 2024 when he missed the entire season with a severe hamstring injury.

G Ben Bartch

Feb. 24: The team signed Bartch, 26, to a one-year deal. Bartch played well in a brief stint at left guard before suffering a season-ending high ankle sprain against the Chicago Bears in Week 14. With Banks expected to move on in free agency, Bartch is in the mix to start at left guard in 2025.

DT Evan Anderson

Feb. 18: The 49ers tendered one-year contracts to exclusive free agents Anderson, DE Alex Barrett, LB Jalen Graham, DE Sam Okuayinonu, OL Austen Pleasants, TE Jake Tonges and TE Brayden Willis. Anderson and Okuayinonu logged a lot of snaps on the defensive line last season and will compete for spots in the rotation this year. Pleasants, meanwhile, was a late-season addition in 2024 who has a shot at sticking around as a backup tackle or guard.

Here’s a look at the free agents from the 49ers’ 2024 roster, including where those players have landed, if applicable.
