Even with two new faces at the helm, the Michigan head football and men’s basketball coaches remained two highest-paid coaches in the university’s athletic department in 2024.

However, the structure of their contracts is vastly different. Men’s basketball coach Dusty May signed a five-year deal in March and will receive most of his income through base salary. His annual salary of $3,625,000 in 2024 is the highest at the university, according to its salary disclosure report released Monday, Dec. 9 .

Head football coach Sherrone Moore’s overall annual compensation tops May, though. The 38-year-old inked a five-year deal in January worth at least $5.5 million per year, but he only made $500,000 in base salary in 2024. The rest of his yearly income is from other forms of compensation, which is not included in the university’s salary report.

While additional compensation, including bonuses and incentives, is standard in head coaches’ contracts, base salary is the primary source of revenue for most.
