A tragic incident unfolded during a large block party in Northwest Jacksonville where a woman, believed to be between 60-70 years old, was fatally shot in the head. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has confirmed the occurrence of the shooting which was detected by ShotSpotter technology around 9:30 p.m. on Friday night, prompting a law enforcement response to the 1100 block of Grothe Street, News4Jax reported. The JSO, upon their arrival guided by a nearby patrol officer, discovered the elderly victim seated on a sidewalk chair with a fatal gunshot wound to her head it was this officer who first responded to the alert, setting into motion a swift yet ultimately somber resolution with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department declaring the woman deceased at the scene. With more than 100 people gathered at the intersection for the event, law enforcement is actively seeking witnesses and surveillance footage in the neighborhood, a call to action echoed by Sergeant Steve Rudlaff, hoping to shed light on the circumstances that led to this unnecessary loss of life, according to First Coast News . As detectives are going door to door in the area for potential leads, Action News Jax reports that the crime scene remains active near Grothe and Eaverson streets, where the block party took place.
