A Severna Park man was charged with setting his neighbor’s house on fire, according to the Anne Arundel Fire Department. Aaron Keel, 59, faces five felony charges, three of them fire-related, as well as home invasion and burglary counts. He also faces three misdemeanors, according to a Wednesday news release. The Anne Arundel Fire Department responded to Belhaven Court in Severna Park on Wednesday morning for a fire at a private residence. Investigators from Anne Arundel County and Annapolis determined the fire was intentionally set and linked to an “unlawful entry,” according to the release. Keel was arrested Wednesday morning at his home, which is in the same neighborhood as the fire. A motive remains unclear. According to Capt. Jenny Macallair, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, Keel allegedly started “multiple” fires inside the house, including on the main floor and in the attic. The home was vacant at the time. The owners, who live next door, recently inherited the house and were in the process of performing renovations, she said. “Regardless of what [the motive] is, it’s just kind of unfathomable that you would unlawfully enter another person’s residence and set it on fire,” Macallair said in a phone interview. Keel is being held without bail at the detention center on Jennifer Road, according to the Maryland Judiciary. Matthew Bernhardt is listed as Keel’s attorney. Efforts to reach him Wednesday evening were unsuccessful.
